Snifferdog Sport Fun For The Whole Family
Snifferdog Sport is different from many dog activities. It is designed to be non-competative more like a recreational activity than a hard core competition.
Teach your dog some simple skills to find a particluar odor and then start having fun.
Are your kids budding outdoor enthusiasts? If so snifferdog sport might be something the whole family enjoys together. We are combining geocaching (an online treasure hunt type game) With K9 scent detection skills to encourage people to play with each other and with their dogs.
Come on out and have some fun.

What is Snifferdog Sport?
Snifferdog sport FAC
What is it? Scent work turned into a game for people and their dogs. If you enjoy walks in the park and your dog enjoys sniffing than snifferdog sport is the game for you. Snifferdog is all about games you can play to train your dog for scent work. The same exercises we use to train search and rescue and detection dogs. Snifferdog events combines the scent work exercises with a golf type game where you walk your dog to areas that he can search for hidden articles.
Does my dog need to be a working dog to do snifferdog sport?
Nope! Snifferdog sport is for the weekend warrior. It is for anyone and any dog that just likes to have fun together.
My dog is an obedience dog school drop out can he play?
Sure. You need to be able to control your dog but snifferdog sport is played on leash so your dog does not need a lot of obedience skills. An advantage of snifferdog sport is that since you and your dog are doing something together the relationship you develop will make any obedience work you do better also. But snifferdog sport is not about looking good or points on or off your performance. It is about taking a walk with your dog and letting him use his nose to find articles that have been hidden for him to find.
If we use detection exercises to train my dog can he used as a detection dog after training?
Not without a lot more work. Snifferdog sport is about having fun with your dog not about working. Snifferdog sport might give you an idea if scent work is a discipline you and your dog want to pursue, but search and rescue dogs and detection dogs have very specific training requirements for the dog and handler teams.

Snifferdog is a sport designed just for fun, while it does teach dogs and people some useful skills. One of the students dogs helped her find their pet cat when she was lost. Buck helped a friend look for her lost cell phone. The ultimate goal for snifferdog participants is to develop family fun days where the article search is combined with a clue treasure hunt map and/or GPS coordinates to find the search areas and locate various articles, followed by meeting for a nice picnic lunch. By the way back to the phone, we did not find it, as it turns out some nefarious character picked up the phone and proceeded to make unauthorized calls until the service was turned off. Our take home message if you loose your cell phone call the phone company first even before you call for the snifferdog!

Tess showing her partner/mom the “article” she found at snifferdog class. Tess indicates by lying down at the article. Admittedly she thinks we should hide kitties out there for her to find rather than the Easter Egg hunt we had. But she is doing a great job and is well on her way to snifferdog level I! The next class starts Wednesday May 19, in Hampstead MD to register call 410 236 2788

In keeping with the “fun” philosophy of the snifferdog title the dogs have proposed. And we could not disagree so there are some changes to the sniffer dog test the articles. They have changed to be more along the lines of treasure items appropriate for dogs. 1 tennis ball, 2 stuffed beanie baby, 3 small (less than 3”) diameter plastic food bowl, 4 metal snap from a dog leash 5 optional item (must meet pre-approval from evaluator. Some sample examples - business card - plastic Easter egg - jingle bell(s) - tea candle - old cell phone - small slipper Cat litter pooper-scooper (clean!)

SNIFFERDOG
A new sport for dogs and their people!
The dogs are given a designated area to search for articles. Each dog starts with 15 points one point is deducted for each minute as the dog searches for articles. The dog must find the correct article and “indicate” it to the handler. To earn a certificate of achievement the dog must find and indicate the all the correct articles before the time is up.
Levels Instinct test: the dog must demonstrate the ability to use his nose to locate a treat or toy.
Level I: The dog must demonstrate the ability to locate and indicate three articles, which are provided by the owner. The dog may work on leash or off, the handler may not cue the dog in any way. The indication must be a specific behavior that the handler can articulate to the evaluator and can be readily observed by the evaluator. The size of the area must be a minimum of 25 feet by 25 feet and not larger than 75 feet by 75 feet depending on the terrain and ground cover, based on the evaluator’s discretion. The handler must provide the evaluator with the five articles below the evaluator may choose three to place in the area. The articles should be pre-scented by the owner by rubbing them between their hands and blowing on them then placing each in a sealed zip lock baggie, which is given to the evaluator. 1 tennis ball,
2 stuffed beanie baby,
3 small (less than 3″) diameter plastic food bowl,
4 metal snap from a dog leash
5 optional item (must meet pre-approval from evaluator. Some sample examples
Level II: The dog demonstrates the ability to scent discriminate. The dog must demonstrate the ability to locate and indicate three articles. Someone will place three articles in the area scented by a person other than the dogs handler. There will also be one incorrect article, which will be scented by a different person. The dog will be given a start article scented by the correct subject and must locate and indicate the three correct articles but not the incorrect one. The articles may be anything that the evaluator chooses they may be scented by the subject rubbing them between their hands and blowing on them.
Level III The dog demonstrates the ability to search an area independently taking directional commands from the handler. The dog must locate and indicate three articles. Someone will place three articles in the area scented by a person other than the dog’s handler. There will also be a minimum of one incorrect article, which will be scented by a different person. The dog will be given a start article scented by the correct subject and must locate and indicate the three correct articles but not the incorrect one(s). The dog must work off leash, the handler may not cue the dog to indicate but may direct the direction and locations the dog searches from outside the designated area. The indication must be a specific behavior that the handler can articulate to the evaluator and can be readily observed by the evaluator. The size of the area must be a minimum of 25 feet by 25 feet and not larger than 75 feet by 75 feet depending on the terrain and ground cover. The handler will be able to see the entire sector from a location outside the search area. The articles may be anything that the evaluator chooses they may be scented by the subject rubbing them between their hands and blowing on them.
Dogs of any age and breed may compete toward snifferdog certificates. The goal is to provide a fun sport for dogs and their people that will allow them to work as a team complementing each other’s skills. The goal is to find the prizes the dogs may be rewarded for finding the articles. This is for those dogs that prefer healing with their nose to the ground. It offers adolescent dogs the incentive to focus and concentrate. It gives “busy” dogs a job they can do. Try it, it’s great fun for most dogs.
