Writing formatted text on this site

h2{color:red}. Text formatting

There are two ways that you can create text formatting in posts on this site.

  1. There are standard WYSIWIG (what you see is what you get) tools above the text field where you write posts. Most likely this is all you’ll need.
  2. However, if you would like to do more elaborate text input, this site also uses a tool called textile. This allows you to easily write posts that are formatted with more sophisticated text styles such as text color and size. For instance, the heading at the top of this post was created with textile. Without textile, you’d have to know some HTML to write formatted text. Using textile, you can even format your emails so that this website displays text styles. Click the link above to learn more about textile. Try loading the sample text and look at how various styles are generated. Here is what you need to do on this site if you use textile.
    • <>After you’ve typed in your text and are ready to format it more, ensure that there is are a couple of blank lines between the text you want to edit using textile and the text you’ve already typed using the WYSIWYG controls.
    • To enter textile formatted text, you need to toggle html source using the <> control above.
    • Make a couple of blank lines after you’ve entered your textile text.
    • You can toggle back to WYSIWIG now. Click the ’save and continue editing’ button to preview below. This procedure doesn’t work flawlessly and may take a little fiddling to get things to look just right.

The are a couple drawbacks to using the WYSYWIG controls on this site. It doesn’t work on some browsers. Also, the post page loads more slowly because of the additional images that have to be rendered on the page. Finally, it is a bit limiting since you can’t modify properties of the text like color and size.

You can also add images to your posts. There are two easy ways to do this:

  1. First, if your a site administrator, you can email the site. Just include the image as an attachment on your email.
  2. Second, if you have a permission level that allows you to upload documents, you can upload images by going to the ‘upload’ button above. You don’t need to upload thumbnails. These will be created in the next step. Now go to your post and look for the ‘insert image’ button at the bottom of the post edit window. Click on this and it will show a window with images (and documents) that you’ve already uploaded on the site. Select the image you want and include it as an image. This will display the image inline with the text. Now select, ‘get the code’. A bit of code will be generated for you. Select ‘add it to post’ and it will paste the code in your edit window. If this doesn’t happen, you have to copy and paste that text into your edit window. You’re all set!

Finally, you can upload other documents to the site (if you have the appropriate permission level to do this). Follow the same procedures as adding images to the site above. If you chose to do step (2) and click the ‘insert image’ button, you will select your document but choose to link to it rather than include it as an image. Then do the rest just as above. That’s it! Easy.
