Buck on “Best Friends” program
Another news story about lost pet detection. This was a video interview Buck attended in Reston VA. His part starts about 15 minutes into the program. We were back there last weekend helping to look for a lost cat. She fell out of a second story window when the screen popped out of the window in the middle of the night.

Article and short movie about Lost pet detection
A very detailed article by Ron Cassie of The Frederic Post.
Mr Cassie wrote a very useful article about recovering lost pets. He included some good pointers for people to help them. One thing his article illustrated the value of a good start article. We need something that smells like your missing pet but not other animals or people that may have been walking through the area recently. We have been in the position of not able to assist when a veterinarian lost a rescue dog they called us a week later everything had been washed and reused the transport crate was long gone. and it was an urban environment without a start article we can not tell the trailing dog what they are looking for. If you are doing transport for a rescue it may be prudent to wipe a cotton swab on the animal and put it in a zip lock baggie. The cost is pennies the time needed is seconds, with luck you will never need any of them.

An article about Bingo a lost hound dog.
One of Chewy & Brando’s searches for Bingo, a lost hound from a local rescue. I am asked frequently about the percent of success for our dogs when they search. My response is that the actual walk up find and recovery by a searching dog was low probably 20% HOWEVER the successful recovery of animals we help I believe is relatively high probably as much as 70 or 80%. I like to believe it may be because of our dogs contribution, getting the owner in the right area, or it may be because the owners that are committed to using all the resources available and call for a search dog are going to go the extra distance and get the job done. At any rate I believe the single most significant factor is the owner. Anyway here is a link to Bingo’s story as well as some other critters PAWS has in their rescue.http://www.paw-rescue.org/PawNewsletter/PAWShakes2006Fall.pdf

Search for 87 year old man
This is an article about a search that Torrie participated in. She was fortunate enough to be able to help locate the missing man. The success of most SAR dog rescues is based on good teamwork. There are usually many different resources involved in successful searches.

Maryland Shelter finds value in good for nothing dog foster dog training program
“Maryland Shelter finds Value in a Good-For-Nothing Dog.” An Article about Nautica and Brian — a pretty incredible team.
I started an informal program at the Humane Society of Baltimore County to help shelter dogs learn manners so they would be more likely to find and succeed in new homes. Nautica was one of the dogs that came through the program. Her success story is entirely due through the hard work of the volunteers and staff at the shelter. They do an awesome job with all the critters they help.
