Our services strive to utilize best practice protocols in the industry.  The classes, seminars and programs are constantly being evaluated, reevaluated and improved.

Obedience Training and other services

There are several options to help you train your dog.  All of the programs emphasize developing a strong relationship with your dog, good communication skills, and the level of obedience you that need for you to enjoy living with your dog.

Private training - This is probably the most efficient way to reach your training goals. We can help you train your dog in your own home or neighborhood where you need it the most.

  1. IF you want someone to train your dog for you, and then coach you on working with your dog -This new program it is designed as a board and train program that is done in your home. You still develop your relationship with your puppy or dog while the training is happening, you can be as involved or uninvolved as you like.  You know where your dog is and what he is up to when the training is not happening.  (It is only available in a limited area and for a limited time at a special rate.)
  2. If you just want guidance but can do the training yourself I can visit with you and your dog and develop a program for you to address or prevent “issues.”  You can train the dog with my support. This is often the choice for people that have a load of questions about starting a new puppy or rescue dog right.  It is also a format that works for some behavior modification programs.
  3. You want support and feed back I coach you through the training process to teach your dog the skills you want to have proficient in you house. This is a choice for people that want a training class of information but in their home at their convenience and on their time schedule. This is also the only option for many behavior modification programs that require follow up and coaching.

Group training classes -  LJT Training offers group training at several different locations or if you have a group of neighbors and friends that want to get training at your location, business, home, or neighborhood, or community, talk to us about hosting a training class in your community.  This may be the most economical way to train your dog and your friends and neighbors dogs as well.

  1. Lucky Stars, Hampstead MD Thursday evenings these classes are 4 weeks long they are a concentrated version of longer obedience classes for people that do not have months to commit but still want a strong foundation of good manners and obedience skills.
  2. Yellow Springs Animal Hospital. Frederick MD  This program is designed to help local rescues and foster dogs learn some good manners skills.  The classes are also open to people in the area that want obedience and manners training with their dog.  The classes are designed so that you can Join at any time.
  3. Custom class at your location, we have put some interesting classes together for families and neighbors that thought it would be good for all the dogs to learn together.   We have put together classes for groups of people that wanted their dogs to learn special skills.  We have put together classes for people that thought a class in their community would be a economical way to get training conveniently located for them.  Feel free to contact us we can discuss what you want and a syllabus to cover that information.
  4. Montgomery County Department of Parks and Recreation.  the classes are going to be offered in Germantown they are going to include the ACK STAR puppy program, the AKC canine good citizen class, and an introduction to Snifferdog Sport.  WE are looking forward to working with the community in the Germantown, Clarksburg, and surrounding areas.
  5. The Positive Dog Trainers in Frederick. This is a cutting edge approach to dog training.  We have two professional trainers the classes are small.  It is a spa type approach so that you can come multiple times each week with your dog.  WE offer the opportunity to spend recreational time with your dog.  Dog “socials” give you and your dog a night out.
Snifferdog Sport
we developed the snifferdog sport a fun recreational activity that almost any person and any dog can play.  Give your dog the opportunity to use his brain and his nose work just like detection dogs.  For more information on snifferdog sport please visit the website at www.snifferdogsport.com

Hypoglycemic dog coaching.  The jury is still out on whether dogs are a legitimate tool to use for detecting hypoglycemia in humans.  Increasing numbers of people are using dogs to assist them as support for conventional tools.  We have had some interesting results with the training program, implying that the dog may be successfully helping.  If you are committed to training your dog for hypoglycemia detection we might be able to help.  Summer 2010 LJT is developing a program that includes an intense coaching seminar to help you teach the trained indication to your dog, the skills for public access testing and additional coaching and support.

Lost pet detection

When we started helping people locate their lost pets there were only a handful of people doing this in the world.  Today if you post a lost pet advertisement on line you can expect to be bombarded with people selling you their advice and services. Much of the advice and many of the techniques were developed by LJT Training.  (We can’t take credit for the inspiration, as most of the information came from techniques developed by individuals creatively addressing their own lost pets.)  LJT became a clearing house for the information, freely disseminating it to anyone that could use it.  For some interesting insights and case studies visit the lost pet posts on this site.  If you or someone you know lost a pet please visit www.ljtpettracking.com we try to maintain information on new developments in the industry and provide free mapping and search management support.  If you want to hire a tracking dog we have some very qualified dogs available.

Seminars & Demos & Workshops

LJT has provided numerous seminars over the years.  One of the greatest complements we have received is to be asked to return time and agin over the years, implying that we are able to provide fresh information to the people we are helping.

Are you sponsoring a charitable animal related fundraiser? Consider a snifferdog instinct test and SAR dog or pet detection dog demo.  Are you looking continuing education speaker?  Consider a workshop or lecture about scent work and snifferdog sport.  Want to help your volunteers or employees develop new skills working with dogs?  If you have a topic you would like us to address please contact us and discuss your organizations needs.

A sampling of some of the seminars we have developed

  • Cadaver training -  beginner to advanced These are done in a workshop environment where the emphasis is usually on working the dogs.
  • Man trailing - Beginner to advanced workshops again you are not going to train your dog unless you are working your dog this these are usually exercise and field work based.
  • Information on scent work and dogs - This has been delivered to organizations that were interested in general information about what the dogs can do and how they do it.  Including search and rescue dogs, snifferdogs, detection dogs, and fun and games that can be done with dogs and scent work.  We have also discussed some of our experiences working dogs that were of particular interest to the organizations.
  • Snifferdog sport - introduction, this can be delivered in a few minutes to summarize what snifferdog sport is all about, as a general information lecture, or a hands on workshop for people to introduce their dog to snifferdog sport.  This program can be a lot of fun at dog clubs, dog day cares, dog parks, and dog parties.
  • Snifferdog sport - training the trainer this has been offered to instructors and people interested in teaching snifferdog sport to their students and clients.  It also includes information to become a snifferdog sport evaluator. It is a combination of lecture and some field work.
  • Snifferdog sport - setting up snifferdog events This is for organizations that think they might want to add snifferdog sport to a fundraising event or as a recreational activity for dogs that have been taught scent work already.
  • Training lost pet detection canine- This is a series of workshops and lectures to help people get started training their dog for lost pet detection.  there is a lot of information and misinformation in this new industry.  These workshops hopefully help people entering the industry wade through the information.
  • PRevention for the high flight risk rescue dog.  - Many lost dogs are from transports or within hours of placement in a new adoptive or foster home.  One thing I like to tell people about lost pet detection is that it is one of the few businesses where we sincerely hope people never need to use our services.  This seminar is designed to help rescue volunteers prevent the need for lost pet detection services and mitigate any lost pet incidents.
  • Good Manners for rescued dogs - This program is all about helping people working with shelter dogs to develop social and mannerly skills to make them more adoptable.  This is delivered in a variety of ways from a few minutes to hit the highlights, a couple of hours as a workshop, and as an actual class or program to help volunteers work with the rescue dogs turning simple environmental occurrences into cues for good behavior.  LJT is partnered with Great Canines offering a revised program to rescues and shelters.
  • Custom class - If you have something you would like to have us discuss with your organization please do not hesitate to call.  If I can not provide the information you need chances are good I know someone who does and will be happy to refer you.

If you have questions about any of our services or if you would like to discuss your dog or your needs please feel free to call or email anytime!
